While it might be a bit rainy for Stampede this year, there’s still no shortage of things to do and see in YYC over the next ten days! And come hell or high water, we are still going to enjoy the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
One of the highlights of Stampede is all the free, or basically free, breakfasts all over town. Our friends at Avenue Magazine have compiled a list of all the best breakfasts and categorized them based on a free, donation-based or paid to help you navigate! Check it out here.
If you want to make a sport of it and see how many you can hit, here’s a more comprehensive list.
One of the best things about Stampede is live music everywhere, no matter what genre you’re into. The Coke stage has an amazing line-up this year, featuring big names like Feist, Metric, and some of our angsty teen favourites, Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday. Check out the full line-up here!
Cowboys tent: You either love it or you hate it; There’s usually no in between. In addition to the stacked line of musical guests, this year’s line-up features a BBQ cook-off with Food Network superstar Guy Fieri. You can come down and watch the FOUR20 Smokers try our hand in the BBQ Competition!
Pro-tip: Follow Cowboys on social media and they usually give promo codes for free tickets every day!
Wildhorse: This year Wildhorse was approved for a patio extension! The extra space will give room for games such as corn-hole and a beer garden serving craft cocktails. While you might be a bit off the grounds, you’re definitely still in the action.
Maybe you hate crowds, music, rides, rodeos… there’s still hope for you. We love going to stampede simply for the food. Of course, you have the traditional favourites – corndogs, mini-donuts – but every year there’s some crazy new concoctions that only the brave will undertake.
On the roster this year: frog legs, pickle popsicles, a Spam hotdog, octopus lollipops and barbecued chicken hearts.
Not so adventurous? There are some amazing sounding treats to keep you satisfied. Harry Potter fans can dig into some Butter Beer soft serve, pickle lovers can try their favourite tangy snack on a pizza, and for the Instagram-savvy, avocado ice cream served in a coconut bowl. Check out the full list here to plan your day of pure, unashamed gluttony.
Stranger Things Fun Fair
Stranger things fans will be excited to explore a new section of the Midway. Organizers have transformed five of midway rides into Stranger Things rides, based on the Hawkins Fun Fair, which will be part of Stranger Things 3. We’ll keep a lookout for Demogorgons.
Keep in mind
Yes, cannabis is legal, but unfortunately, cannabis cannot be consumed on the Stampede grounds. Public consumption has not been adopted at this time. The Stampede has stated they will be constantly revising their policies, but Stampede is very much a family-friendly event. Smoke pits are allocated for cigarettes only at this time.
Happy ‘Peding y’all!
